Zero Upfront PPA vs Captive Solar: Which Model Fits Your Business?
Every industrial or commercial business that decides to go solar eventually faces one big question: should you own the solar plant, or simply buy the electricity it produces?
This single decision affects your upfront investment, your balance sheet, your long-term savings, and how much control you have over your energy future. At Kirnoday Energy, we work with factories, warehouses, and commercial facilities across Gujarat every day to help them choose between two of the most popular solar financing models: Zero Upfront PPA and Captive Solar.
In this guide, we break down both models in simple terms so you can decide which one fits your business.
What Is a Zero Upfront PPA?
A Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) is an arrangement where a solar developer like Kirnoday Energy designs, builds, owns, operates, and maintains the solar power plant on your rooftop or premises, at no capital cost to you. You simply agree to buy the electricity generated at a fixed, pre-agreed tariff, usually lower than your existing grid tariff.
How It Works
- Kirnoday Energy invests in and installs the solar system on your site
- You pay only for the electricity you consume, at a locked-in rate
- We handle all operations, maintenance, and performance monitoring
- The system remains our asset throughout the agreement tenure
Key Advantages
- Zero upfront capital investment
- Immediate reduction in electricity costs from day one
- No maintenance responsibility or technical risk
- Predictable, fixed energy pricing over the contract term
- Ideal for businesses that want savings without touching their capex budget

What Is Captive Solar?
Captive Solar is the ownership model, where your business invests in and owns the solar power plant either fully on your own premises, or as part of a shared Group Captive project set up under an open access structure.
How It Works
- You (or your company, along with partner consumers in a group captive setup) invest in the solar asset
- The plant can be built on your own site or at a remote location connected via the grid
- You enjoy the full financial benefit of every unit of electricity generated
- Under India’s Electricity Rules, 2005, a captive project requires consumers to collectively hold at least 26% ownership in the plant and consume at least 51% of the annual generation to qualify for captive status and the associated surcharge exemptions
Key Advantages
- Complete ownership and control of the energy asset
- Significant long-term cost savings once the investment is recovered
- Energy independence you are not tied to a third-party tariff
- Strong return on investment (ROI) over the 25+ year plant life
- Eligible for accelerated depreciation and other ownership-linked tax benefits

Zero Upfront PPA vs Captive Solar: Side-by-Side Comparison
Upfront Investment | None | Capital investment required |
Ownership | Developer (Kirnoday Energy) owns the asset | Business owns the asset (fully or via SPV) |
Electricity Cost | Fixed tariff, lower than grid rate | Cost of generation, typically lowest over plant life |
Maintenance Responsibility | Handled entirely by the developer | Owner is responsible (can be outsourced to EPC/O&M partner) |
ROI Horizon | Immediate savings, no capital recovery needed | Longer payback period, higher long-term returns |
Tax Benefits | Not applicable to consumer | Accelerated depreciation available to owner |
Best Suited For | Businesses that want savings without capex commitment | Businesses with strong capex appetite seeking maximum long-term ROI |
Regulatory Requirement | Standard PPA agreement | Must meet 26% ownership / 51% consumption norms under Electricity Rules, 2005 |
Which Model Should Your Business Choose?
The right choice depends on three factors: your capital availability, your energy consumption profile, and your long-term business goals.
Choose Zero Upfront PPA if:
- You want to start saving on electricity bills immediately without any capital outlay.
- Your business prefers to keep capex reserved for core operations.
- You want a hassle-free, fully managed solar solution.
Choose Captive Solar if:
- You have the capital to invest and want to maximize long-term ROI
- You are looking for energy independence and long-term cost predictability
- You want to benefit from accelerated depreciation and ownership-linked tax incentives
- You’re open to a Group Captive structure to share investment with other businesses
Many of our clients also choose a hybrid approach starting with a Zero Upfront PPA to see immediate savings, and later transitioning to captive ownership as their business scales.
